#GBTRosa2018 – Breast cancer awareness campaign

Grupo Biotoscana participates in the worldwide breast cancer awareness campaign during the month of October.

Montevideo, Uruguay, October 1, 2018. October is the month of breast cancer awareness and is celebrated around the world in order to help increase attention and support for awareness, early detection and treatment1. GBT joins this cause and invites you to raise your hand and participate in the activities that will take place throughout the month.

Breast cancer is the most frequent malignant tumor among the female population2. According to the WHO, every 30 seconds a breast cancer is diagnosed somewhere in the world and a woman dies every 53 minutes because of that pathology. One in 10 women will develop breast cancer at some point in their lives3.

Early diagnosis is vital because it impacts on the survival rate, which can reach 100% if detected early2. For this reason, early detection of breast cancer through the use of mammography and other techniques is essential since they change the prognosis of the disease. Raising awareness among women about the importance of knowing breast self-examination techniques, periodic check-ups and mammography are key to being able to detect it in time2.

During October, about 90,000 women will hear the devastating words “it is breast cancer” and about 2,000 will die because of it2. So, what can we do about it?

There is no foolproof way to prevent breast cancer. However, there are measures that can be taken to try to reduce your risk. Many factors are beyond our control, such as being a woman or getting older. However, others can be changed and could reduce the risk: maintain a healthy weight, be physically active and limit or avoid alcohol. Other factors that could reduce the risk are breastfeeding for several months or avoiding the use of hormone therapy after menopause2.

Breast cancer early detection and diagnosis
Sometimes breast cancer is detected after symptoms arise, but many women fail to manifest them. That is the reason why doing periodic screening tests is so important.
What can I do to detect breast cancer in a timely manner? The World Health Organization, regulations of different countries, as well as different scientific associations and non-governmental organizations recommend that women practice:
• Annual or biannual mammography from 40 years of age
• Annual clinical breast examination starting at 25 years of age
• Breast self-exam in order to know your breasts and detect abnormalities

Appropriate treatment
There are several types of treatment for breast cancer. The main ones are: surgery, radiotherapy, chemotherapy and hormonal therapy. It is common for several or all of these treatments to be combined, depending on the case of each patient4.

GBT Grupo Biotoscana provides therapeutic alternatives for breast cancer through treatments with Halaven by Eisai, Abraxane / Abraxus by Celgene and Navelbine by Pierre Fabre Medical that offer hope and life quality for their patients. That way, patients can have more time for important moments, with their family and more opportunities to enjoy every little moment of joy in their daily routines.

At GBT we work every day for the health of our patients and, during October, we invite you to take an individual or group photo and upload it to your social networks with the hashtag #GBTRosa2018. The power is in your hands!
